Good morning to everyone on the Front Porch on this Friday morning in March, 2020. We had some snow flurries over night and a high temperature projected to be in the mid 30's today.

No climbing in hilly areas with these knees. We did a lot of walking in Arizona but kept it to flat areas. Definitely had no interest to do the 5 hour climb down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up.

We are getting outside for fresh air in the neighborhood and have gone to the drugstore and grocery store a couple of times. Other than that we have watched to much TV and putting to many hours on my laptop.

Hoping everyone has a restful weekend although at our ages it is more like we have 6 Saturdays and 1 Sunday each week. Again we would like to salute those that are working to keep us safe. Wisconsin has called up some National Guard members to aid where they can.

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s National Guard has called on forces to prepare for any requests in regard to the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to the news release, about 300 troops have been mobilized for active duty.

“We are working hand-in-hand with our partners across state government to ensure our forces are postured and ready to respond to anticipated requests for assistance,” said Col. Eric Leckel, the director of domestic operations for the Wisconsin National Guard. “Serving our state during times of emergency is one of our core missions in the National Guard, and we stand ready to assist the state with whatever it may ask of us.”

Morning-ish?

Just got my second cancellation of doctors appt, first was Covid-19 shutdown for 2 months.

Second was for water damage, from burst pipes. Insert expletives feel like This is getting way too long.

Time to clean stove, get firewood, have snow coming again, and maybe clean/oil my fishing rod.Only 4' of ice left on my lakes.

Spring is officially in the air, as black bears are awakening from their slumbers. Friend saw one on her back porch last night, different from the bobcat she usually gets. 🤣

Hello, Peepers!

Well, I ventured out today. I really wasn't planning on going anywhere. But when a senior friend whom I've known almost forty years called, I felt compelled. She now lives in Florida and has severe respiratory problems (asthma and COPD). She found herself with no way to get out, no cash, and a need to order food through her local delivery service. So I got myself together and ventured out.

I drove to my bank to withdraw some cash. First thing I noticed was the parking lot was empty and the lobby was closed to the public. So I couldn't go inside. Second thing I noticed that there were long lines in the drive-up teller lanes, but the ATM lane had nobody at all. So, of course, I zipped up to the ATM machine, put on my disposable latex gloves, and after checking my balance, I proceeded to make a withdrawal--only to find the ATM machine empty of cash! So I pulled out, went around the building, pulled back into the lot, and pulled in behind a now very long line of cars in the teller lane. Needless to say, it was a long wait and we barely inched forward. In fact, at one point, I found myself nodding (to sleep) and the bobbing of my head was what woke me up. Thank goodness my foot was firmly pressed to the brake.

After a really l-o-n-g wait, I finally pulled up to the teller (cannister tube) and was greeted by a very apologetic and cheerful voice. And in just a few minutes, my transaction was complete. But then I had to drive to her credit union which I also found the lobby closed to the public and another set of long lines in the teller lanes. But it went relatively quickly and the deposit was made.

As I drove home, I placed a quick call to my friend to let her know that the deal had been done and she thanked me over and over and in just a few minutes later, she texted to let me know her food order would soon be delivered. All good!

So once I got home, I crawled myself back in bed and immediately went back to sleep.

So glad it's Friday!!!

Hi, all,

This morning it was 43 and felt like 36. At least it’s sunny! Far cry from yesterday…

Yesterday was a wonderful first day of spring. It got to 79 by 5 PM and I uncovered one of the chairs on the porch, took my glass of wine and a book out there for a while. It was so enjoyable! Kind of took me away from the state of craziness we are all in.

@DaveMcK ...and as our crazy weather “non-pattern” continues, they say we may see a few flakes on Monday!

@Frozenoem ...only had time for one Irish coffee on St. Patrick’s Day so may have another tomorrow. Chardonnay is my first choice for wine, then a Pinot Grigio, then a Cabernet.

As for doc appointments, one of my friend’s 3 back surgeries have been cancelled; she is in such pain, but they are considered “elective.” Another friend who just came back from Costa Rica was surprised her acupuncture appointment was cancelled. Really? Then the nurse told her there would be tons of paperwork to fill out because of just coming back from another country. She and her husband are the ones who had a cruise to the UK planned for next month. Today they got that trip re-booked to a riverboat cruise in Russia for June of 2021! Must be nice!

PS…they are the ones who live in the woods and solved their bear problem by taking down their bird feeder.

@LaDolceVita Glad you could get some food supplies. I’ll try tomorrow at my Acme. That 79 temp yesterday was so exciting, but March returned today.

@MsStretch ...butt slides or butt bumps may be the only way I get to the basement in the near future unless my stepson can renovate my bathroom to accommodate the washer and dryer. Those steps are so hard to navigate. Outside butt slides have been over for me for quite a few years, and don’t want to accidentally have any now!

Good afternoon to everyone on the Front Porch on this Saturday on March 2020. We did not get to stay here but we had a nice visit to see how the other half lived while visiting the Grand Canyon!

Coffee with a Conscience at El Tovar

A perk of staying at the legendary El Tovar Hotel is the Keurig coffee machine in your room. But up until 2.5 years ago, the pesky personalized pods created waste that neither guests nor Xanterra staff felt good about. In 2014, Xanterra partnered with Keurig and joined its Grounds to Grow On program, which enables Xanterra to collect the used K-Cup pods, box them up and send them to Keurig's disposal partner. The partner separates the pods from the grounds, composting the grounds for future agricultural use and giving the pods to Covant Energy to be converted to energy. In 2016, 183,000 K-Cup pods were collected at the South Rim, totaling a whopping 7,300 pounds that was diverted from a landfill and converted to compost and energy.

Good morning, Our Front Porchers!

Well, early this morning I arose. I made a cup of green tea (for medicinal purposes), a bowl of maple and brown sugar oatmeal with raisins and walnuts in it, followed by a cup of coffee with heavy creamer and ample Truvia. Yum!

Once fully awake, I texted a couple of friends (other early risers) just to check in. We all have had a habit of checking to make sure all's good long before the coronavirus crisis hit and even more so now. I have one older friend who generally is up and stirring between 4 or 5am every day. Of course, it wasn't until after 8 o'clock when I called her. But when I did call, the call went immediately to voicemail which meant her phone was turned off and probably on the charger. So I left her a message and went about getting myself ready for the day. Then around 9 o'clock my phone rang. It was my friend. I quickly answered the phone, but there was something unusal in her voice. She sounded "funny"--apprehensive or as if something was not quite right. When I asked her what was wrong or up, she told me with a hint of defiance, that she was in church. I guess she thought she'd challenge me upfront before I could say anything to her about the need to stay safe and social distancing. She had told me just yesterday that her church was going to be closed indefinitely because of the virus. But apparently she found another church, a small church within walking distance of her home, and she decided to go. I could say nothing other than to be safe and let her get back to the Sunday service.

But right now, I am both saddened and very angry by her decision to go to another church--not just because she is defying what is recommended for the masses, especially the elderly, to do to stay safe and healthy, but because she just found out this week that one of her own church's ministers was diagnosed with the coronoavirus. So even though she may be asymptomatic now, she herself could have had an exposure and be infected and thus exposing others to infection. But she selfishly has chosen to go out without regard for other people and the danger she could potentially present.

Sorry for the vent here. Y'all know I generally like to keep it upbeat here. But this just hit and it hit me just not right.

Anyway, my stay-at-home weekend is coming to an end today. Then it will be back to work for me as I'm one of the "essential workers" talked about in the media. I/we are doing our best to stay safe and avoid exposure and infection. But it's scary out there let me tell you.

So after another big cup of comfort (coffee), I'm soon going to getty-up from here. Prayers going up and fingers crossed. Here goes nothin'!

Everyone up here is pretty much just hunkering in place and avoiding people in general, regardless of the situation.

We've just had our first couple of cases in our county. 5.6 to 7.8 days incubation period, just not worth it to play nearer my god to thee. Local churches are just opting for streaming services.

25* and sunny, expecting snow tomorrow and need to make kindling for fires. It's just easier.

Firewood is now in garage, defrosting.

I have all my shopping done, took me 3 mornings and 5 stores. Only 4 grocery stores, as one of the stores I went went to was Petsmart. Received Chewy email that my shipment of dog food was not on its way I had to do something quick. Pestmart is well stocked but they do not want you in the store they have a number to call for curbside pick up. The grocery stores are well stocked with most food items. Some do not have bread or legumes and none have TP, except teeny rolls. Hopefully I will still be in good health after the next 5 days passes. Planning to stay put now for anotherweek or so.

Weather is beautiful here and it is easy to forget the virus for a short while. I am waiting for that bullet train which is supposed to come from New York to hit us. Hope that it does not.

Good evening to everyone on the Front Porch on this Thursday on the 20th of March! We have been doing our share of social distancing lately. We have gone to the drug store a couple of times and taken advantage of the insurance company allowing us to get a 90 day supply of our medications early. We have been to the grocery store a couple of times and cleaned out our freezer. This has resulted in a couple of interesting evening meals like brats and steamed vegetables in a bag in the microwave.

We are looking at days in the mid 40's with off and on shower's over the next few days.

I'm seeing an increase in people following the posts here on the Front Porch. I am feeling good about our offering some ways for people to enjoy coming to the Front Porch where we have good distancing. Have a restful evening and enjoy your morning coffee here with us.

Hi, Porch Peeps!

Well…an interesting visit to my bank and stores today. Armed in my disposable gloves, I set out. I was the only customer in the bank. They closed our drive through years ago, and the ATM, not that I ever use it, is in the lobby, so they kind of have to keep this branch open. Floor was marked with places to stand, but no Plexiglas for the tellers!

Got finished with that and went to Fresh Market. Handicapped spot was available. An employee in a long white lab coat like thing was standing inside the doors disinfecting carts and pointed to the ones that were ready. Very few people were in the store. I got almost everything that was on my list. Got to the checkout, mentioned my FM reusable bags I brought in and the girl told me they were not allowed to bag, so I proceeded to bag my stuff like I do at the Acme. Next stop was Starbucks. Long line at the drive through which of course I expected since the store part is closed. Next and final stop was Giant. Cars were sparse in the lot and I got my usual Handicapped spot. Signs and announcements about keeping distance abounded. Got what I wanted…of course paper and cleaning products weren’t even on my list and those shelves were empty. In one aisle, this older woman asked if I could help her. OMG! I felt so bad! I went a little closer and she said she had her radio on her head and the battery had fallen down the back of her shirt. I apologized immensely, but told her I couldn’t help her. She said. “I’m not contagious or anything.” I just couldn’t make myself help her. Eventually after taking off her jacket, the battery pack fell out on the floor. Now I feel so guilty, but I don’t know who this woman was. In normal times, I wouldn’t hesitate to help. So this is what we have come to. Geeze! I get to the checkout and this store did have a Plexiglas shield for the cashier, and he packed my bags like normal. Thanked him profusely for working, and then thanked an older woman who was working outside. She told me she was glad to have the job since her other job was in a school and of course she can’t work if the schools are closed.

So that was my shopping experience for today. Glad it is only an “every-other-Friday” jaunt. Next will be my normal Acme trip on Sunday. Wonder when there will ever be any paper products on the shelves.

@catwoman500, I had read that most stores are requesting you don't bring your reusable bags to the store, and those that still allow it say you must bag your own groceries. When you think about it, it makes sense. I always use reusable, but when and if I venture out to public places, I don't wish to possibly infect surfaces with my bags. They are already working hard to keep everything disinfected. So hanging my bags up temporarily and using plastic (which I read are safer than paper) and will just take to plastic bag/wrap recycling bins.

What was some woman doing in the store with a radio on her head?! Of course, it's hard to deny help, but these are extraordinary times and this woman should have left all unnecessary foreign objects outside in her vehicle.

Noticed I was low on cat litter yesterday, so dang it, can't let that run out. Tried PetSmart's new curbside delivery. While I was ordering litter online, figured I might as well throw some cat food in. Some was unavailable (sold out) for shipping and my store had very limited supplies. Couldn't get the shreds the kids like, but found suitable substitutes. (Darn spoiled TNRs.) I really am liking this bringing it out to my truck. No pushing a cart around the aisles looking for what I need. No standing in line at the cashier. 👍

Once people fill up their sheds and garages with TP & PT and the suppliers & stores have a chance to catch up with the sudden increased demand, some of us less inclined to panic hoard might stand a chance to resupply as needed.

Kinda tired of ordering list of groceries to be delivered and they arrive 2 days later, all 1 bag, with 1 gal of milk and 2 loaves of bread out of 4 maybe 5 expected bags. Thank you Market Basket, H.E.B. and especially Walmart, for letting people hoard. Oh and don't forget the media for scaring us to death, so we can race right out and buy everything on the shelf whether we need it or not and be exposed so we can share the virus.

Good morning, Front Porchers!

I've enjoyed hearing about everyone's pre-apocalyptic experiences as we hunt and forage for food and other goods. The hoarding is so ridiculous and selfish. But we are now in week three or four of the pandemic and it is still a problem. In fact, I haven't been able to find a can of Lysol spray for the past three weeks. So the other dayI decided to try Amazon. They were out of stock. So at a lark, I turned to eBay and that's were things got crazy. You see I landed on a one day auction that had started at .99 cents and rose to and sold at $54.00! $54.00 for a 16 oz. can of Lemon Scented Lysol Spray with a shipping cost of $8.25. So in the end some poor, desperate person paid $62.25 for one singular can of Lysol spray that under normal circumstances would sell for less than $5.00 at most any store. Outrageous!!!

@LydiaN586309 My gosh that is horrid and ridiculous about the Lysol. I am using peroxide in a spray bottle for most chores. Of course there is no peroxide available for purchase either. They have stopped showing the virus count on the TV screen and in a way I am glad. Some of the announcements and that counting made me feel like I was an actor in a surreal apocalypse movie. Still not able to get paper products in my neck of the woods. The shelves are low on some products but we are Ok with what we have. Our well went out and we had no water for 1 day, had to get from neighbor, it is fixed now, all is well.

Hip, hip, hoo-ray! This is my first day off from work. I have been furloughed for one week starting today and then after that I will have to return to my regular schedule. But I am glad for this respite as the stress and overload were tag-teaming me to the point of exhaustion.

Anyway, I hope and pray everybody on Our Front Porch is doing well, staying home, and being safe. Remember, even though we have to practice social distancing for a while...

Top of the Morning to everyone on the Front Porch on this last Monday of March, 2020. We have clear blue skies with a very low chance of rain and a high of 54 today. Another day inside and a chance to assess the Winters impact on the yard and gardens. Our lawn care people have raked most of the yard and are scheduled to mow for the first time this year in a week or so.

We planted over a 150 new hulbs last Fall and will post a photo of their statue later today. Also will try to get a photo of our returning robins.

Good Morning!

My normal Monday morning “trash truck alarm” didn’t wake me this morning. Our borough reduced the trash pick up to one day a week during this COVID-19 thing.

Yesterday was my grocery day and it was mainly uneventful.

I was having a “cheat day” and wanted a bagel so badly, but they had packed up the bagels in packages of 4. No loose bagels. So I bought a day old pack of 4 pumpernickel ones. Guess I can freeze the other 3. I’d feed the birds if I thought it wouldn’t draw other undesirable critters to the yard!

There were hardly any people there yesterday. Some had gloves, some had gloves and masks, some had nothing. Plexiglas in front of the cashiers, X’s on the floors to show where to stand at the deli and checkout lines. No pickle barrel, but they had pickles in plastic containers for you. I scored a box of Kleenex! Only a few of those, and the other paper product shelves were empty as well as the cleaning products and wipes. Got the rest of what I needed. It wasn’t much, but at least I’m good for a week again.

Other than that since there was no one to really talk to other than the deli girls, my friend Maryanne who works there, and Jill the cashier, I was out in less than an hour! I saw my neighbor’s car, but not him. My other friend had texted me that her daughter, a nurse, didn’t want her going to the Acme on Sundays. She has to go during the “senior hours” during the week. Gee… I’m an adult; no kid is going to tell me what to do. Why kill myself getting to the store at 6 AM just to get there and find all these other old people complaining about not being able to get a roll of TP? I’ll stick to my routine until they tell me I’ll be arrested for doing it. It was fine yesterday morning. Most people were in a good mood. YOU HAVE TO BE!!!!!

Wipes were also available to wipe the carts.

I like the new guidelines for bringing groceries into the house. Heard them Saturday night and Sunday AM: You don’t take your reusable bags like @MsStretch said, so you bring the plastic bags in and put them in the sink. Unpack them and throw the bags away, wash the sink and your hands. Easy peasy.

Oh, interesting….the Acme employees that I thanked for working through this mess were soooo genuinely appreciative. It was like no one has been thanking them! That’s just not acceptable! If it weren’t for them, where would we be?

Monday It snowed again 8" boredom will disappear for awhile.

Abbott labs in ME will be making a 15-minute Covid-19 test kit, starting in a week. And GM & Ventec will be making ventilators within the month, contrary to T's hissy fits. Had to mention that, before I forgot.

The elusive TP roll has reappeared at local convenience stores, can't say anything about big stores haven't been to Wally World/Shaw's/Hannafords's in a month.Nor do I think I will be for abit.

Guess it's time to play in the snow! When's Spring coming again? The lawn and driveway have disappeared again, under a thick and heavy coating of white.

Good morning to everyone on the Front Porch on this first day of April 2020!

Hoping I am finding everyone safe on the Porch this morning and sipping on a fresh mug of coffee and eating your breakfast while checking the TV listings for a couple of movies. I hope you book worms have found a new source. We still have a couple dozen books on CD'S that we found at garage sales last Summer.

I have a Facebook friend in England that recently was complaining about people trying to sell JIGSAW puzzles online at greatly inflated prices. Greed still seems to rule even at times like these.

Thankfully there are people that want to help those that are in need due to a lost job or health issues. There are restaurants that are providing them with free or low cost meals. Some are delivering hot meals to healthcare workers at ground zero hospitals.

We are supporting a group that provides food to those that are in need now because of the economy

Help us reach our goal of distributing 100,000 boxes of food to those struggling with hunger!

Please stay safe and stay at home now.

I've been using it to relieve boredom for last few years. Several levels of crosswords from easy to extremely difficult.

I have a list of books available on CD, audio, will need to look around for it. Or wait for links to come in email, it's a bi-weekly kinda list. The hazard of needing to read everything under the sun.🤣

Good morning, Everybody!

Popped open my eyes this morning--just happy to be yet here. Doing the social distancing, self-isolating, being a hermit thing to the very best of my ability. I look out of my living room window and I see a car or truck in almost everyone's driveway, but no people. Accept yesterday, one of my oldest neighbors could be seen walking from her home which is at the far end of the block, all the way to the corner and back. It is quite a hefty little walk. But she took her time and made it home eventually--not one car passing by or any other human being being out either. It was so surreal. But at least the streets have not been overrun with zombies or Men in Black type aliens (from that Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones movie). So at least that's something. Smile.

I am enjoying my time at home though. I've been cooking and exercising daily--riding my stationery bike daily. Did two miles already this morning. I've been watching, watching, and watching TV. Binge watching 911, 911-Lone Star, The Biggest Loser, and a whole bunch of free movies and of course the news (as much as I can stand of it). Local news, world news, CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews, BBC News, ad infinitum. All of them telling the same story--each with their own slant. But THE STORY is much the same.

But happy days! The weatherguy predicts temps in the 50s and sunshine. So far so good. The cloudy, gloomy skies of yesterday have now blown clear. And the sun is already up, the skies are blue, and my mood is elevating upward. So I will be venturing out in a few hours. I have a limited list of things to do and then I'm going to screech home on two wheels--rounding the corner, up my drive, and back inside my house. I will push the door shut tight with one hand while simutaneously turning all of the locks with the other. Home. I can breathe. Aaahhh!

So I hope everybody on the Porch is doing well and staying safe and healthy. Remember:
